I am so sad to hear it and in fact I am glad you are safe after all. That is why I always think this land does not belong to us ..., only solution would be to go back once we accomplish what we came for.

Thanks for the comment Eran. I'm sad to hear that it happened even in IN. For me, this has been the first such incident. I had no similar experience even during the time I used to ride VTA everyday. Perhaps Silicon valley is more tolerant to immigrants :)

(BTW I was focusing on the matter at hand during the CA trip and again, this is an unpleasant thing to talk about. I wrote this piece on my way back from CA)

The issue of nativeness as you describe is very relevant. US is made up of immigrants and immigration is in fact what made this country. Early Irish and Italian settlers faced similar (perhaps more serious) discrimination [ see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Irish_sentiment ] so I suppose we are not alone.

Anyway, I've had many many experiences like this not only in Indiana but also in few other states, even in NYC. For example, when I used to go to the Monroe county library in Bloomington, IN I used to hear this every time from the people hanging around there. Every time !! But if you look at the profile of these people, these are mainly uneducated, homeless and jobless people. I'm not putting them down but just think about the mentality of an uneducated guy trying to survive in this economy. Humans in general are good at complaining rather than fixing their own mistakes.

There is another side to this story when you talk about very small percentage of so called certain educated people. During one of my tours to US, abt 5yrs back, someone told me he hate all Asians because his best friends lost their jobs because his company decided to outsource certain parts of their business. Thats a completely different story but I think its again related to the bigger question you bring up here.

Most americans, even Obama itself once mentioned this country consists of immigrants. For every X in the set American, if X is not related to an Indian tribe, they can not complain about immigrants. I worked with lots of very good people in IU and I still love to work with those. Beyond IU, I've met so many great and charming people and that percentage of people is much much higher than the type of people we talk about here.

Anyway, just like your slogan "Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits", I'd add "Using public transportation after certain time of the day will put both you and others in trouble" (doesn't rhyme but looks good :D)
